Choose a type of good to produce, and focus your buildings on producing that one type of good.

The easiest strategies are:
Industrialist - builds industrial complexes
Casher - builds enterprise zones and residences
Farmer - builds farms

Slightly tougher are:
oiler - builds oil rigs
techer - builds research labs

toughest by far is:
MBR - builds military bases

Sorry for borrowing this thread, got a question for Rockman (or anybody else who cares to answer):

Do the more difficult/tougher strategies such as oiler or MBR have a bigger pay-off in the end, if played right?

most of the time I'd say yes the MBR does have a big payoff toward the end if timed exactly right. It's very hard to time and you need to be online to resell the moment your other goods have sold. How well it does depends on the military market prices. It sould only be played as a theo or demo.

As for the oiler strat, well I have never found it to be good at all. The only way I know of that the oiler strat does well is in the ffa where sometimes there is a late set market buyout done to boost 1 country into the stratospere of networth. If you can stockpile enough oil and put it at a high enough price but lower than the buyout price you can make a bundle. Of course if you are in a large clan than can do such a buyout for you a hugh stockpile of oil can put you in the #1 spot.

like most things, generally speaking, reward comes with difficulty. not to say that things like a rep casher can't do well, or even win, but a properly played tmbr will generally top a properly played casher.

oiler is more difficult due to market issues more than strategy. oil can't be dumped on the private market (in most servers) so it relies entirely on the public market. so while it's played pretty similarly to farmer, you don't have the recourse of "ah hell i need money, oh hi there private market".

join a proper clan in alliance and you can generally find somebody to teach you the stuff you need to do well. ffa has a few good netting clans too, but the priorities are different. more wargaining and less netgaining.

Oiler is tougher because oil prices tend to give it the lowest income per acre of all the strategies
Techer is tougher because you have zero production unless you are teching your turns

MBR is by far the toughest because your production is linked to keeping your private market bought out, and there is very little margin for error in making sure that you sell enough military to keep your private market bought out.

MBR will not beat a properly played casher. Properly played MBRs are extremely rare. Switching from another strategy to MBR in the last week or two of the set often works well, but switching early in the set to MBR is probably the most difficult strategy, and its upside isn't really any more than a casher, farmer, or techer.

One some servers, techer does have more payoff, but primary is not one of them. Tech prices always seem to be bad in primary because too many people play techer. On alliance and FFA, techer often does have the best income per acre while stockpiling, but on primary, casher, farmer, and indy tend to be better strategies than techer.
