For the next while (till end of this reset and likely next too) I likely will be unable to get online much (as has already been evident since about two or three days into this reset). It's already been difficult lately and likely to get tougher due to work.

You don't need mIRC. You can use anything that can connect to irc networks. Xchat is another popular program

Omega's mud still worked last time I tried it? that was a few years ago though. I used to have an awesome client for running it.
