Cutting cable and switching over to a 3rd party internet provider for nice, cheap, unlimited internet. Need a router, as the compatible modems aren't wireless.

Ideally, I'd like to set up a VPN in the future... I know that you need certain routers that are able to configure VPN. But I also don't want to spend too much...

This D-Link is going on sale for $49 after Christmas... http://www.bestbuy.ca/...0l-dir-820l/10257101.aspx

There are SOOOOOOOOOOOO many routers to choose from and I have no idea really what to look for. Is this any good for $50? Are there other better ones for $50? Would spending, say, $75ish get me something that's REALLY REALLY better? Any VPN capable routers under $80?

Biggest question is do you plan to use wired or wireless? If wireless, what is your house setup like? How far from the router, how many walls in between, etc

'cutting cable' doesn't mean going wireless. I assumed it was in reference to switching Internet providers.

Yes, wireless.

It's a little 1800 sq foot townhouse. The front half of the house is the entry foyer/garage, and immediately above is the master bedroom. The back half of the house is the basement, the living room/kitchen. and then 2 bedrooms above. We don't care about the top 2 bedrooms at least for a while. The place where I intend on putting the router would require the signal to travel through the floor immediately down to the basement, and through one wall/floor about 5 feet up to the master bedroom.

I've always had the best luck with Cisco routers. You need to get a wireless router as they are very inexpensive these days, it might even be hard to find one that isn't wireless actually.

This one is on sale and is a good deal:

There are tons to choose from at all price ranges. Stay way from cheap brands like belkin or netgear etc...

BTW i have a wireless DSL modem, all built in. It works through many walls and floors no problem. I think if you get a good quality router you won't have any issues with an 1800 SF place.

Yeah I've always had linksys but the past 2 years I've had the router built into the modem from Rogers or Bell and we've been staying in a small bungalow so range was no issue.

We're going to go with DSL and this is the modem that is required - SmartRG SR505N

Looks like that modem is wireless. I wonder what the range is like.

just got the Asus RT‑N66U Wireless Router, was using an old linksys router for around 8 years.

My tablet and smart TV were starting to drop constantly. with the asus router ive found faster speeds and less dropping with the smart TV, but the samsung galaxy tab will not connect to either router, scratching my head over the issue

My wireless modem has pretty good range. I have about a 2,000sf home and can get it everywhere inside my house and most of my yard.

every wall blocks signal a bit and some materials block more than others and even glass blocks signal a bit.

in some high-rises cellphones can't get signal or its very weak due building materials block signals.
