So, if I lose a lot a lot of jets when I attack someone, does that mean I sent too many?

I feel like I lost a disproportionate number of jets when I attacked today

It's too general a conclusion to draw upon that.
It can have several other explainations that has nothing to do with that.

Other things that affect this ratio (of offensive units to defensive units lost) are for instance Medical tech(defender), weaps tech, attack type, DR, govts, readiness, and just the randomness of defensive losses.

Now if you lost 500 times more, then yes, you oversent, no matter these other factors, but several of these factors can actually be pretty large if taken to the extreme. Within 'normal' grabbing parameters however, the your losses should usually be ~1.25-5 times defenders losses.

The attacker always loses 8% of the units they sent, correct?

yep. defender can lose obscenely little when the DR goes high tho.

I imagine if the people getting grabbed have defense bonuses that also kills more offense, right?

Yeah I lost over 600k jets and the defender only lost 130k turrets, but his allies lost almost 200k turrets

I feel like the bushel price on private market is very disproportionate to the public market when you compare to the military prices on the private vs public market

With a decent percentage of military costs tech I can get my price for jets down around $165, which is comparable to the public market price at 150 with a 6% commission added,

With that same military costs tech percentage my private market bushel price is still north of $300 per bushel, which seems odd and seems like it's something that should be fixed by the game developers

My estimated food loss per turn went up just from buying food, how does that happen? It only went up by a few but still, I didn't do anything except buy bushels, how does having more bushels increase projected consumpstion?

Recourse decay, simply put, the more bushels you have, the more you lose per turn.

.1% is the decay rate. Buying 1m bushels will add 1k to food consumption.

Fyi, the decay rate is the same for cash over 2b.

Its interesting because if you have a net consumption of say 1k food each turn, then ofc if you buy 1k food you have enough for 1 turn. And because of decay if you buy 100k food you have enough for about 90 turns according to the food projection tool ingame. Its a new feature and ofc its better than what we had before where food decay wasnt taken into account. But as your food stock decreases over those 90 turns, so does your decay. So in reality the food will last about 94-95 turns.

This all assumes constant food consumption, which basically means cashing/teching your turns and if you are teching, you have to not tech residential tech.

So what if you have 100m food then and still have a consumption before decay at 1k/turn? well you now consume 101k food per turn so it will calculate that you have enough food for 990 turns.
And if you have 1B food it will say 999 turns.
These are in fact very wrong. In reality you can last a lot longer than that.

It's quite easy (and decently quick) to solve this numerically in google sheet, matlab/octave/python/etc or excel. I could do it in 3 minutes or less, or I can dig up the sheet I did it on last time which might take longer. But I would have to solve it for each instance of Food consumption + Food on hand which means only being able to calculate it when I got the sheet/file available to me on a PC(or google sheet by phone).
The more elegant way to do it is to come up with the analytical expression for it, so you can calculate it on your phone calculator or TI-84 tho sadly I am not that good at math. Anyone?

I just estimate my own decay. For example:

I have 10m bushels on hand. I take 5k off my consumption because I'll have an average of 5m bushels on hand per turn, not 10m.

Most the time I have way less and decay doesn't matter much to me.

This is what I do as well for a quick and dirty calculation. But it's error will grow the more turns you spend since you will spend more turns with less than 5m bushels on hand than you will with more than 5m bushels on hand.
It works for all servers except express tho (well, not alpha).

I just attacked someone who had more than twice as many acres...thought I would get more.
For those wondering: "But Terry you just learned about food decay, why would you attack the 2nd largest country with so much time left in the set? Is it a case of not being able to resist stirring the pot"?
My thought process was - that is a lot of acres. I want acres. Food prices are extortionist....maybe the Christmas spirit will make them not retal.

You couldn't have gotten more than 2500 acres even if I had 100k acres. You can only get 10% of your total buildings.

Those sorts of attacks rarely pay off, as we see here. I would also argue the Christmas spirit will make countries more likely to retal 😊
